Brixton Market visit

As a part of our inspiration week we visited Brixton Market.  Seeing the market reminded me of subject we’ve been learning about in the Studio 1A lessons.   The subject was about how buildings can talk.  To me Brixton Market is a very good example of this.  What is this building trying to say to us?  First of all the sculpture of the cherries on the top of the building give us the clue what is going on inside.  What about the other part of the sculpture, the foxes? They have been familiar inhabitants of cities for long time now, but perhaps in the streets around the market they can be spotted in greater density, thanks to the dustbins full of tempting leftovers.  Inside of the market we were also able to experience many different languages of architecture. Various cafes and restaurants are offering the cuisine of different countries. They are designed the way we could easily identify the type of food they specialize in. This experience made me realize that thanks to my studies I look now at buildings in a different way.

We really enjoyed looking, touching and experiencing some of the iconic Vitra furniture during our visit to their showroom in London on Tuesday afternoon. Thanks to Huren for organising and to Jane for giving us a very interesting insight into the company's journey so far.

Chelmsford Festival of Ideas 2012

Well done to second year Interior Design and Interior Architecture students for participating in the Memory & Local Identity workshop last Tuesday 16th October. The collaboration with the Anglia Ruskin Final Year Architecture students was a valuable experience and we hope to see more events between the two schools soon.

Students from the two institutions alongside local residents worked together in mixed groups mapping Chelmsford's City Centre with their senses. A series of walks brought out new perceptions of public space. The groups produced posters indicating their "flavour" of the part of the city they explored; these will be presented to the public during the Ideas Festival.

Cambridge Sainsbury Laboratory by Stanton Williams

A House for Essex by FAT & Grayson Perry

As part of Alain De Botton Living Architecture Project, architecture practice FAT (Fashion Architecture Trends) in collaboration with artist Grayson Perry are commissioned to design a house in the Essex Landscape.

According to Perry, the building will make references to eccentric home-built structures that can be found in the county as well as shrines, lighthouses and fairytales. Have a look and see what you think..

Cake & Neave - 'The little artists' works 1995-2010

John Cake & Darren Neave

From 1995-2010 artists John Cake and Darren Neave produced their infamous Lego recreations of iconic modern art masterpieces, under the banner of ‘The Little Artists.’ These included Damien Hirst’s Shark Tank, Tracey Emin’s Bed and Joseph Beuys’ Sledges.

This book is an overview of the Lego series and also looks at the duo’s other work from that period, a body of work that questions contemporary art and the culture that creates it.

Michael Szpakowski , a WSD lecturer has essays published in the book, it is definitely worth a look!
